Drug rehabilitation Virginia
Over the past forty years, rehabilitation for alcohol and other drugs has proliferated and differentiated into many different clinical approaches in the state of Virginia. Speaking in a historical perspective, this is a short amount of time for the evolution of a medical science addressing a problem such as drug and alcohol addiction.
In the beginnings of drugs and alcohol treatment, from the end of the WW II until the 1960’s, a rehab center was basically a flophouse where help was provided to alcoholics who were medically withdrawing from severe inebriation. The treatment consisted of bed-rest, Librium and a small amount of B12 and other vitamins to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that could lead to brain damage and/or death. The length of stay in such a rehab center ranged from a few days to no more than two weeks.
In Virginia, some private centers would accept to keep alcoholics for longer periods of time, but these centers were generally wings of an existing hospital. Therefore, the clinical imperative was based on psychiatry and mental health disorders with addiction being seen as a secondary consequence of a primary mental disorder.
More recently, alcohol and drug rehabilitation in Virginia has become more diversified and the public needs to be aware of the different approaches that are now available to those suffering from an addiction that is very different from the alcoholism that was being “treated” in those early days.
With the emergence of drugs like LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, drug abusers are needing more successful clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past.
Certain of these changes have brought very innovative treatment approaches that are proving themselves to be successful and others have chosen to assign a label of disease to addiction and are purporting that this disease is chronic and progressive (meaning that it gets worse with time, even when the drug or alcohol addict is in recovery and no longer using).
Detox centers Virginia
Several residential treatment facilities in Virginia won't accept someone to their program unless they have been through Detox. These treatment centers are simply not staffed or equipped to handle the necessary medical precautions that are required during the first weeks of drug and alcohol withdrawal. It is always recommended to find a rehab center in Virginia that will be responsible for both the detoxification and the rehabilitation since the majority of individuals addicted to alcohol and other drugs will feel that the week or two of Detox was all they needed. For this reason, they will not be as willing to confront the emotional side of their addiction and will be less likely to agree to continue their treatment if the treatment is done in two separate centers. Sadly, less than 5% of Detox graduates in Virginia will remain sober.
Two categories of Detoxification are available in the clinical market in Virginia.
According to the duration, the amount of alcohol and other drugs taken and the type of drugs abused, someone might either need a social model detox or a medical model detox. Social model detox may only consist of confined bed rest and a staff taking vital signs to ensure that more intense care isn’t needed. Nonetheless, some social model detox facilities will provide mega-vitamin therapy, massages, good nutrition and other holistic practices that will help reduce the level of anxiety and discomfort of the patient and get him to be more agreeable to continue his clinical care after detox.
In Virginia, medical detox is required for important alcohol ingestion and the chronic abuse of barbiturates and other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures. The individual will need medical support to be stabilized from this form of addiction.
The information for the state of Virginia has been provided by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.
With a population of 7,187,734 citizens, 22,966 law enforcement officers, 52,000 individuals incarcerated within the state prisons and a probation population of 40,359, Virginia comes 35th in the national ranking for violent crimes rate.
39.3 kgs. of cocaine, 0.7 kgs. of heroin, 6.3 kgs. of methamphetamine, 59.4 kgs. of marijuana and 2,861 tablets of ecstasy were seized by the Federal authorities in Virginia during 2004. Likewise, there were 75 meth labs seized in the state by the DEA, local and state authorities.
Cocaine, in both powder and crack forms, is prevalent throughout Virginia in both wholesale and retail quantities. Considerable levels of violence continue to be related with the crack cocaine trade in urban areas. The Richmond and Tidewater regions of Virginia both boast a consistent, long-term heroin abuser population. Pockets of heroin distribution are present in other regions of the state as well, but the issue is less pronounced. Lately, "experimental" use of heroin by younger drug users was increasing, but appears to have stabilized.
