Drug rehabilitation Pennsylvania

During the past forty years, rehabilitation for alcohol and drugs has proliferated and differentiated into many different clinical approaches in the state of Pennsylvania.  This is a short period of time for the evolution in the field of addiction.

From the end of the WW II until the 1960’s, all rehab centers were basically flophouses helping alcoholics medically withdraw from severe inebriation.  Bed-rest, Librium and a minor quantity of B12 and other vitamins were provided in order to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that could lead to brain damage and/or fatality.  The duration of stay in these centers extended from a few days to a maximum of two weeks.

In Pennsylvania, a few private centers would keep alcoholics for longer amounts of time. Generally, these centers were wings of an existing hospital and their clinical imperative was focused on psychiatry and mental health disorders, so addiction was seen as a secondary result of a primary mental disorder.

More recently, alcohol and drug rehabilitation in Pennsylvania has become extremely diversified and people need to be aware of the numerous various approaches now available to those suffering from an addiction that is different that the alcoholism that was being “treated” in the early days. Indeed, with drugs such as LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, addicts are needing more successful clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past.

Certain of these changes have brought very innovative treatment approaches that are proving themselves to be quite successful. Unfortunately, others have assigned a label of disease to addiction and believe that this disease is chronic and gets worse with time, even when the addict is in recovery and no longer using alcohol and drugs.

Detox centers Pennsylvania

Many residential treatment facilities in Pennsylvania will not accept an individual into their program until they have completed a Detox. This means that these treatment centers are not staffed or equipped to handle the required medical precautions during the first week or two after the alcohol and drugs are no longer taken.  It is always recommended to choose a rehab center in Pennsylvania that can be responsible for both the detoxification and the rehabilitation since most individuals addicted to alcohol and other drugs will feel that the week or two of Detox was all they needed and will not be as willing to confront the emotional side of their addiction and, thus, are less likely to agree to continue their treatment if the treatment is provided in two different facilities. Statistically, less than 5% of Detox graduates in Pennsylvania will remain sober.

In Pennsylvania, there are two categories of Detoxification available in the clinical market.
According to the duration, amount of alcohol and drugs taken and type of drugs taken, a person may need either a social model detox or a medical model detox.  Social model detox might only consist of confined bed rest and someone to take vital signs to ensure that more intense care isn’t needed.  However, certain social model detox facilities will provide mega-vitamin therapy, massages, good nutrition and other holistic practices in order to reduce the level of anxiety and discomfort of the patient and get him more agreeable to continue his clinical care once the detox in completed.

In Pennsylvania, medical detox is reserved for severe alcohol use and the chronic abuse of barbiturates and certain other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures. In these cases, medical support is needed in order to safely come off the drugs or alcohol.

The information for the state of Pennsylvania has been provided by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.

With a population of 12,287,150 residents, including 29,557 law enforcement officers, 71,000 inmates within the state prisons and 125,928 individuals on probation, Pennsylvania comes 23rd in the national ranking for violent crimes.

Federal authorities seized 173.8 kgs. of cocaine, 14.3 kgs. of heroin, 4.1 kgs. of methamphetamine, 1,178.4 kgs. of marijuana and 20,373 tablets of ecstasy in Pennsylvania during 2004. There also were 106 clandestine meth labs seized by the DEA, state and local authorities.
Heroin, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana are the most available, popular, and trafficked illicit drugs in Pennsylvania. Nonetheless, clandestinely produced drugs, such as methamphetamine, and club drugs, such as MDMA (ecstasy), are also readily available to users of different ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. PCP and LSD are available principally to users in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regions and even though OxyContin availability appears to be decreasing, other diverted pharmaceutical drugs remain available to users throughout Pennsylvania.
