Drug rehabilitation New Mexico
During the last forty years, rehabilitation for alcohol and other drugs in New Mexico has proliferated and differentiated into various clinical approaches. Speaking in a historical perspective, this is a short period of time for the evolution of a medical science addressing an issue such as drug and alcohol addiction.
In the beginnings of drugs and alcohol rehabilitation treatment, from the end of the WW II until the 1960’s, rehab centers were commonly flophouses for helping alcoholics medically withdraw from important inebriation. These rehab centers offered bed-rest, Librium and a small amount of B12 and other vitamins to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that can cause brain damage and/or death. The duration of stay in these rehab centers extended from a few days to no more than 14 days.
At that time, certain private centers in New Mexico would accept to keep alcoholics for extended periods of time, but these centers were generally wings of an existing hospital and their clinical imperative was focused on psychiatry and mental health disorders. Therefore, addiction was considered a secondary consequence of a primary mental disorder.
More recently, with the abuse of drugs like LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, drug users are requiring more successful clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation in the state of New Mexico has then become very diversified. Thus, consumers must be aware of the different approaches now available to those suffering from an addiction that is quite different that the alcoholism that was being “treated” in the early days of rehabilitation.
These changes have brought innovative treatment regimes that are proving themselves to be extremely successful. Others have resorted to assigning a label of disease to drug and alcohol addiction and are purporting that this disease is chronic and only gets worse with time, even when the addict is in recovery and no longer using alcohol and other drugs.
Detox centers New Mexico
In the state of New Mexico, a lot of residential treatment facilities will not admit someone to their program unless they have been through Detox. What this means, is that these treatment centers are not staffed or equipped to handle the medical precautions that are necessary during the first week or two of drugs and alcohol withdrawal. It is always better to choose a rehab center in New Mexico that can be responsible for the detoxification as well as the rehabilitation. In fact, most individuals with a drug or alcohol addiction will feel that the week or two of Detox was sufficient. Therefore, they will not be as willing to confront the emotional side of their addiction and will also be less likely to agree to continue their treatment if it is done in two different facilities. Unfortunately, less than 5% of Detox graduates in the state of New Mexico will remain off of alcohol and other drugs.
Two different categories of Detoxification exist in the clinical market in New Mexico.
According to the duration, the amount of alcohol and other drugs taken and the type of drugs abused, someone may need either a social model detox or a medical model detox. Social detox might not be anything more than extensive bed rest and a staff taking vital signs to make sure that more intense care isn’t needed. Nonetheless, certain social model detox facilities also provide mega-vitamin therapy, massages, healthy nutrition and other holistic approaches that will help reduce the level of anxiety and discomfort of the patient. Therefore, the patient will become more agreeable to continue his rehabilitation once the detox is completed.
In the state of New Mexico, medical detox is reserved for important alcohol consumption and the chronic abuse of barbiturates and some other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures. Medical support is required in order to safely come off the drugs and alcohol.
