Drug rehabilitation Louisiana

Over the past forty years, Louisiana drug rehabilitation for alcohol and other drugs has proliferated and differentiated into many different clinical approaches when dealing with addiction.  Speaking in a historical view, this is a short period  of time for the evolution of a medical science to address a malady of this nature.

In the premature days of drugs and alcohol treatment, from the end of the WW II through the 1960’s, all rehab centers were mostly flophouses for helping alcoholics medically withdraw from severe inebriation.  These centers provided Librium, bed-rest, and a small amount of B12 and other vitamins to put off DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that can lead to brain damage and/or death.  The length of stay in these centers is from a few days to no more than two weeks.
A few private centers in Louisiana existed that keep alcoholics for longer periods of time, but these centers were wings of an existing hospital and clinical imperative was fixed on psychiatry and mental health disorders, with addiction being seen as a secondary consequence of a primary mental disorder.

More recently, alcohol and other drug rehabilitation in Louisiana has become very diversified and consumers need to be alert of the many different approaches that are now available to those suffering from an addiction that is very different that the alcoholism that was being “treated” in those early days.

With drugs like LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines individual users are requiring more thriving clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past.

Some of these changes have brought about very innovative treatment regimes that are quite successful and others have resorted to assigning a label of disease to addiction and purporting that this disease is chronic (meaning that it lasts forever) and progressive (meaning that it gets worse in time, even when the addict is in recovery and no longer using alcohol and other drugs).

Detox centers Louisiana

A lot of residential treatment facilities in Louisiana will not admit someone to their program until they have been through detoxification.  What this means, is that treatment center is not staffed or equipped to handle the essential medical precautions that are needed during the first week or two after alcohol and drugs are no longer taken.  It is always best to find a rehab center in Louisiana that can be responsible for the detoxification as well as the rehabilitation since most individuals that have been addicted to alcohol and drugs will feel that a week or two of detoxifications was all they needed and will not be as willing to confront the emotional side of their addiction and are less likely to agree to continue their treatment if the treatment is split between Louisiana detoxification and rehab in two different centers.  Statistically, less than 5% of detoxification graduates in Louisiana will stay away from alcohol and other drugs.
There are two categories of Detoxification offered in the clinical market today in Louisiana.
Depending on the duration, amount of alcohol and other drugs taken and type of drugs taken, a person may need either social model detoxification or medical model detoxification.  Social model detoxification may not be any more than confined bed rest and someone to make sure that more intense care is not required.  However, there are some social model detoxification facilities that supply mega-vitamin therapy, message, good nutrition and other holistic practices that cut the level of discomfort and anxiety of the patient and lean towards being more agreeable to continue his clinical care after detoxification.
Medical detoxification in Louisiana is set aside for severe alcohol ingestion and the chronic use of barbiturates and some other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures and need medical support for someone to be stabilized from this form of addiction.

The information for the state of Louisiana has been provided by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.

With a population of 4,465,430 residents, 19,833 law enforcement authorities, 47,100 inmates with the state prisons, and 36,319 individuals on probation, Louisiana ranks 6th for its national violent crimes rate.

During 2004, the Federal authorities seized 678 kgs of cocaine, 0.7 kgs. of heroin, 83.1 kgs. of methamphetamine, 864.2 kgs. of marijuana and 22,475 tablets of ecstasy in Louisiana. Likewise, the DEA, state and local authorities seized 123 clandestine meth labs that same year.

The illicit drug menace in Louisiana is the widespread availability and abuse of hard drugs such as cocaine, crack cocaine, and heroin, along with its home-grown marijuana and the increasing danger of local production of methamphetamine and designer drugs. Drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana comprise the bulk of drugs shipped through and arriving in the state of Louisiana.
