Drug rehabilitation Indiana

Over the past four decades, drug and alcohol rehabilitation has proliferated and differentiated into several different clinical approaches in the state of Indiana.  Speaking in a historical perspective, this is a short period of time for the evolution of a medical science addressing an issue such as drug and alcohol addiction.

From the end of the WW II through the 1960’s, all rehab centers were basically flophouses helping alcoholics medically withdraw from severe alcohol consumption.  These rehab centers offered bed-rest, Librium and a small quantity of B12 and other vitamins in order to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that could cause brain damage and/or death.  The duration of stay in these rehab centers ranged from a few days to a maximum of 2 weeks.

Some private centers in Indiana would keep alcoholics for extended periods of time, but these centers were commonly wings of an existing hospital. Therefore, their clinical imperative was focused on psychiatry and mental health disorders with addiction being seen as a secondary result of a primary mental disorder.

More recently, in Indiana, alcohol and drug rehabilitation has become extremely diversified and people need to be aware of the many various approaches that are now available to those suffering from an addiction that is extremely different from the alcoholism that was being “treated” in those early days.

Indeed, with drugs such as LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, abusers are requiring more successful clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past.

Certain of these changes have brought innovative treatment regimes that are proving themselves to be very successful while others have resorted to assigning a label of disease to addiction and purporting that this disease is chronic and only gets worse with time, even when the addict is in recovery and no longer using alcohol and other drugs.

Detox centers Indiana

Some residential treatment facilities in Indiana won't admit someone to their program unless they have successfully completed a Detox.  In reality, these treatment centers are not staffed or equipped to handle the necessary medical precautions that are required during the first weeks after the alcohol and drug consumption has ceased.  It is always recommend to choose a rehab center in Indiana that will be responsible for both the detoxification and the rehabilitation. In fact, most individuals with a drug or alcohol addiction will feel that the Detox was all they needed and won't be as willing to confront the emotional side of their addiction and will be less likely to agree to continue their treatment if it provided in two different facilities. Statistically speaking, less than 5% of Detox graduates in Indiana will stay off of alcohol and other drugs.

In Indiana, there are two different categories of Detoxification available in the clinical market.
Depending on the lenght, the quantity of alcohol and drugs taken and the type of drugs abused, someone may need a social detox or a medical detox.  A social model detox may only consists of confined bed rest and someone to take vital signs to make sure that more intense care isn’t needed.  Nonetheless, certain social detox facilities will provide mega-vitamin therapy, massages, healthy nutrition and other holistic approaches that will reduce the level of anxiety and discomfort of the patient. This will help getting the individual more agreeable to continue his clinical care after the detox is completed.

Medical detox in Indiana is required for important alcohol use and the chronic abuse of barbiturates and certain other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures. In these cases, medical support is needed in order to safely come off the drugs and alcohol.
