Drug rehabilitation Hawaii

Over the past four decades in Hawaii, drug and alcohol rehabilitation has proliferated and differentiated into several different clinical approaches. Speaking in a historical perspective, 40 years is a short period of time for the evolution of a medical science addressing a concern such as drug and alcohol addiction.

In the early days of drugs and alcohol rehabilitation treatment, from the end of the WW II through the 1960’s, all rehab centers were basically flophouses helping alcoholics medically withdraw from important inebriation.  These rehab centers offered bed-rest, Librium and a minor quantity of B12 and other vitamins to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures. Indeed, DT's and seizures can cause brain damage and/or fatality.  The duration of stay in these rehab centers ranged from a few days to a maximum of two weeks. 

In Hawaii, some private centers would keep alcoholics for longer periods of time. These rehab centers were generally wings of an existing hospital and the clinical imperative was focused on psychiatry and mental health disorders. Addiction was seen as a secondary result of a primary mental disorder.

More recently, with drugs like LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, users are requiring more successful clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past. This is why, in Hawaii, alcohol and drug rehabilitation has become very diversified. People need to be aware of the many different approaches that are now available to those suffering from an addiction that is extremely different that the alcoholism that was being “treated” in the early days.

Some of these modifications have brought extremely innovative treatment approaches that are proving themselves to be quite successful while others have resorted to assigning a label of disease to addiction and purporting that this disease is chronic and progressive. Several residential treatment facilities in Hawaii will not admit someone into their program unless they have been through Detox.  These treatment centers are not staffed or equipped to handle the necessary medical precautions that are required during the first weeks of alcohol and drug withdrawal. It is highly recommended to find a rehab center in the state of Hawaii that can be responsible for the detoxification as well as the rehabilitation. The majority of individuals with a drug or alcohol addiction will believe that the week or two of Detox was enough to handle their addiction. Depending on the lenght, the amount of alcohol and other drugs taken and the type of drugs being abused, someone may need either a social detox or a medical detox.  Social model detox may not be anything more than confined bed rest and someone to take vital signs to ensure that more intense care isn’t required.  Nonetheless, there are some social detox facilities that will offer mega-vitamin therapy, massages, healthy nutrition and other holistic practices that will help reduce the anxiety and discomfort of the patient and get him to be more agreeable to continue his clinical care after detox. 

In Hawaii, medical detox is needed for severe alcohol abuse and the chronic use of barbiturates and some other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures. The individual will need medical support to be stabilized from this form of addiction.
