Drug rehabilitation California

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation has proliferated and differentiated into several different clinical approaches confronting the addiction problem in the state of California over the last 4 decades. This is a short period of time for the evolution of a medical science adressing an issue such as alcohol and drug addiction.

In the early days of drugs and alcohol treatment, a rehab center basically was a flophouse helping alcoholics medically withdraw.  These centers offered bed-rest, Librium and a minor quantity of B12 and other vitamins in order to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that could lead to brain damage and/or death.  The duration of stay in these flophouses ranged from a few days to a maximum of two weeks.

There were also a few private centers in California that would keep alcoholics for longer periods of time. They were generally wings of an existing hospital and their clinical imperative was focused on psychiatry and mental health disorders. Therefore, addiction was considered as a secondary result of a primary mental disorder.

Today, with drugs like LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, drug addicts are requiring more successful clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past decades.

Recently, alcohol and drug rehabilitation in California has become extremely diversified and people need to be aware of the several different approaches now available to those suffering from an addiction. Today, rehabilitation is very different that the alcoholism that was being “treated” in the early days.

Some of these modifications have brought very innovative treatment approaches that are proving themselves to be extremely successful. Unfortunately, others have assigned a label of disease to addiction and are supporting the fact that this disease is chronic and progressive.

Detox centers California

In California, many residential treatment facilities won't accept someone to their program until they have been through a Detox.  This means that these treatment centers are not enough staffed or equipped to handle the necessary medical precautions required during the first weeks of drug and alcohol withdrawal.  It is better to find a rehab center in California that will be responsible for the detoxification as well as the rehabilitation. Most individuals with a drug or alcohol rehabilitation will feel that the Detox alone was all they needed and won't be as willing to continue their treatment if the detox and the rehabilitation are done in two different centers in California. Overall, less than 5% of Detox graduates in California will remain sober.

There are two categories of Detoxification available in the clinical market in California.
Depending on the lenght, amount of alcohol and/or drugs taken and tthe ype of drugs taken, a person may need either a social model detox or a medical model detox.  A social model detox may not be anything more than bed rest and someone to take vital signs to make sure that more intense care isn’t required.  However, there are certain social model detox facilities that give mega-vitamin therapy, massages, healthy nutrition and other holistic approaches that reduce the anxiety and discomfort of the patient. This will contribute to the patient being more agreeable to continue his clinical care after detox.

Medical detox in California is necessary for severe alcohol consumption and the chronic use of barbiturates and other pharmaceutical drugs. A medical detox is needed to prevent seizures and to safely come off the alcohol or drugs.

The information for the state of California has been provided by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.

There are 85,736 law enforcement authorities in the state of California for a total population of 34,501,130 residents. There are 239,900 individuals incarcerated in the state prisons, while  350,768 others are on probation. Overall, California ranks 10th for its national violent crimes rate.

In 2004, a total of  3,186.6 kgs.of cocaine, 121.4 kgs. of heroin, 786.5 kgs.of methamphetamine, 131,871.5 kgs. of marijuana and 329,973 tablets of ecstasy were seized in California by federal authorities. Likewise, 764 methamphetamine laboratories were seized by DEA, state and local authorities.

Because of California’s diverse culture and unique geography, there are several issues that affect the drug situation in California. Drugs such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana are smuggled into the state from Mexico; nonetheless, methamphetamine and marijuana are manufactured or cultivated in large quantities within California. San Diego and Imperial Counties remain a principal transhipment zone for various drugs – cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine – smuggled from Mexico. Even though the northern part of California is awash in methamphetamine in  the majority of rural areas, heroin remains the number one drug of abuse in San Francisco while heroin and crack cocaine continue to impact Oakland, and methamphetamine continues in and around Sacramento.
