Drug rehabilitation in Alaska

Alaska alcohol and drug rehabilitation has proliferated and differentiated into many various clinical approaches in order to confront the addiction problem.  Speaking in a historical perspective, four decades is a short amount of time for the evolution of a medical science addressing such an addiction.

From the end of the WW II through the 1960’s, all rehab treatment centers were basically helping alcoholics medically withdraw from severe intoxication.  These rehab centers provided bed-rest, Librium and a small quantity of B12 and other vitamins to prevent DT’s (Delirium tremens) and seizures that can lead to brain damage and/or death.  The duration of stay in these treatment centers ranged from a few days to about two weeks.

Some private centers in Alaska would keep alcoholics for longer periods of time, but they were usually wings of an existing hospital. Their clinical imperative was focusing on psychiatry and mental health disorders and addiction was seen as a secondary result of a primary mental disorder.

More recently, alcohol and drug rehabilitation in the state of Alaska has become more diversified and clients need to be aware of the many various approaches that are now available to individuals with a drug or alcohol addiction. Today, addiction treatment centers differ greatly from what tey used to be.

With drugs like LSD, crack cocaine and methamphetamines, drug users are needed more efficient clinical interventions than the alcoholics of the past.

Certain of these modifications have brought very innovative rehabilitation programs that are quite successful while others have resorted to assigning a label of disease to drug and alcohol addiction. Furthermore, they are purporting that this disease is chronic (lasting forever) and progressive (it gets worse in time, even when the drug or alcohol addict is in recovery and no longer using alcohol and other drugs).

Detox centers Alaska

In the state of Alaska, several residential treatment facilities will not admit someone to their program until they have successfully completed a Detox.  These treatment centers are not staffed or equipped to handle the necessary medical precautions needed during the first two weeks after the use of alcohol and drugs is stopped.  It is always recommended to find a rehab center that will be responsible for the detoxification and the rehabilitation. Most persons addicted to alcohol and other drugs will feel that the Detox was all they needed, and will not be as willing to confront the emotional side of their addiction. They are also less likely to agree to continue their treatment if they have to attend 2 different centers.  Statistically, less than 5% of Detox graduates in Alaska will stay off of alcohol and other drugs.

There are two different categories of Detoxification available in Alaska.
According to the duration, quantity of alcohol and other drugs used and type of drugs taken, someone may need either a social model detox or a medical model detox.  Social model detox might not be anything else than confined bed rest and someone taking vital signs to ensure that more intense care isn’t needed.  However, there are certain social model detox facilities that provide mega-vitamin therapy, massages, good nutrition and other holistic practices in order to reduce the anxiety and discomforts of the patient. This will help the individual to be more agreeable to continue his clinical care after detox.

Medical detox in Alaska is for severe alcohol use and the chronic use of barbiturates and some other pharmaceutical drugs that are known to cause seizures. In these cases, medical support is needed.

The information for the state of Alaska has been provided by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.

There are 1,686 law enforcement officers in the state of Alaska for a total population of 634,892 residents. 44,400 individuals are incarcerated in the state prisons, and another 4,803 individuals are on probation. Alaska is ranking in the 12th position for its national violent crimes rate.

During the year 2004, a total of 220.7 kgs. of cocaine, 2.0 kgs. of heroin, 0.7 kgs. of methamphetamine, 3.2 kgs. of marijuana and 6 tablets of ecstasy have been seized in the state of Alaska. Likewise, 66 methamphetamine laboratories have been seized by the DEA, state and local authorities.

Due to its close proximity to the Pacific Rim and its shared border with Canada, Alaska is both a transhipment point for controlled drugs to the United States and a consumer state. Historically, drug trends observed in the other states are eventually observed in Alaska. This includes the increasing menace methamphetamine, Ecstasy, GHB and other "Predatory Drugs." Alaska has the highest per capita rate of alcohol addiction, rape, and suicide in the United States, partially attributable to controlled drug abuse.
